Testing

Test policies for colleges and universities are constantly changing. It is recommended that you visit the websites of the schools you are considering regularly to ensure you have the latest information.

SAT/PSAT

The state of Illinois requires that all Juniors take the SAT exam in order to graduate. Each Spring the state pays for students to take the SAT (Juniors), PSAT 10 (Sophomores), PSAT 8/9 (Freshman) during the school day. Some students find it beneficial to take the SAT more than once. Students wishing to take the SAT more than once can register at SAT.org

            Free SAT Practice

Khan Academy is the Official SAT Practice resource

Practice exams are also available through Collegeboard directly.

PSAT/NMSQT

Juniors and Sophomores have an opportunity for additional SAT practice by taking the PSAT/NMSQT during the school day each Fall. This test is separate from the state mandated SAT or PSAT 10 that students will be required to take in the Spring. Students who take the PSAT in grade 11 enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students must register through the Counseling Office to take the exam. The cost to register for the exam is approximately $20.

               Advanced Placement

MHS currently offers six different AP courses in the building: Calculus AB, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, European History, and Spanish Language. These are rigorous college level courses. Students can earn college credit and placement by taking AP exams in May. There is a fee of approximately $100 for each exam that student register for. Please contact your counselor with any questions. Information about a colleges AP policy can be found here.

              ACT

Many colleges and universities will accept both SAT and ACT scores for admission. Students wishing to take the ACT can find registration and additional information here.

Accuplacer

Students interested in taking Dual Credit courses offered for Spoon River College credit may be required to participate in Accuplacer testing in order to be eligible for the course. We work to offer this testing in the high school building at least once each Spring. Students also have the option to test at SRC’s Macomb campus. Additional information about placement testing can be found here.
